Try as we might, we can’t totally dismiss Sony’s new digiframes. Sure, we find the things kind of played out, but at least the
S-Frame DPF-XR100 and DPF-VR100 models (due in November for $250 and $200) now offer AVCHD video support along with the usual 10.2-inch WSVGA LED backlight LCD display. If that weren’t enough, the just announced DPF-D830 will also be out in November ($150), and while it doesn’t support hi-def video, the 8-inch device is the company’s first with a built-in rechargeable battery (up to 100 minutes). Wild, huh? PR after the break.

Barry’s back, kids! The CEO of
Commodore USA just informed us that, in addition to slapping Commodore stickers on various all-in-one PCs, he has acquired the rights to the Amiga name (we only hope that
the process went a little smoother this time around). The plan is to sell machines that fully support AROS — an open source variant of
AmigaOS 3.1 that the kids seem to go crazy for. We can’t wait to get a look at these bad boys, but for now it looks like we’ll have to do with the picture of an old Amiga 3000 he inexplicably included with the PR. The PR, that is, that can be seen in its entirety after the break.

You’ve heard of this Love Plus thing, right? This Nintendo DS-based “dating simulator” is apparently a big deal in Japan, giving Otaku the opportunity to chat up (and kiss) girls the only way they know how: on a hand-held game console, with a stylus. To promote the latest version of the game (Love Plus +), Konami has developed an Augmented Reality iPhone app that players can take to the coastal city of Atami and use to interact with their virtual girlfriends at any of thirteen romantic spots. One can even book a a room at the Ohnoya hotel which, according to Discovery News, offers futon beds and a “barcode panel that allows the men to visualize their girlfriends in a flattering summer kimono.” Over 2,000 virtual lotharios visited the resort town during the campaign, which began on July 10 and ends today. Check out the the trailer for the game (in Japanese, which doesn’t diminish the enjoyment for our English readers one bit) after the break.

The Cray-1A first made the scene in 1976, weighing 5.5 tons (including the refrigeration system) and running at 80MHz — with a whopping 8MB RAM. Who wouldn’t want to own one — or a miniature version of one, for that matter? Chris Fenton would, apparently. Yes, it’s that Chris Fenton — the electrical engineer who once made a
$50 laptop out of a PICAXE 18X Microcontroller and 96 bytes of RAM (and some wood). And he’s back with a 1/10-scale Cray-1A. And unlike
a similar project we’ve seen in the past, this bad boy runs a custom Cray emulator (too bad there doesn’t seem to be any Cray software floating around). Wild, huh? Get the whole scoop (and some pointers if you want to roll your own) after the break.

Sometimes it feels like the Military-Industrial Complex only exists to keep us entertained with tales of
laser weapons and
robots that eat enemy combatants — not that we’d complain if it did! And for today’s fantastical
wargadget, we have nothing less than a flying Humvee. The Transformer TX project calls for four-man vehicle that drives like a jeep and then takes off to avoid roadside bombs (or impress the ladies). While DARPA has yet to say who will be awarded with the contract for the conceptual design stage of the project,
Popular Mechanics has done some digging and it looks like Lockheed Martin and AAI Corp are both on the short list. While the former has declined to talk about its offering, AAI’s incorporates something called “slowed-rotor / compound,” where a rotor provides lift on takeoff, and when it achieves a certain speed wings take over. We’ll be waiting for our review unit, but in the meantime you can get a closer look after the break.

Are you the warden of a small-town prison, or perhaps an irate movie theater usher who’s sick of ungrateful patrons interrupting
Step Up 3D because they can’t be bothered to turn of their handsets?
Cellphone jamming is, for the most part, still out of the question, so Berkeley Varitronics has introduced a little something called the Wolfhound. Previously known as the Bloodhound, the device lets you hone in on RF signals, which means it won’t help you if phones are powered down, but if your perp has one on standby, or if they’re talking, texting, or surfing the web, you’re golden. Interested? Of course you are! Hit the company up for a price quote — but not before checking the video after the break.

Unlike lots of other
media streaming devices we’ve seen, this one is pretty straightfoward: the USB dongle plugs into your PC or Mac, the receiver plugs into your TV’s HDMI input, and what you sees and hears (on your computer) is what you gets (on the TV). The Wireless USB connection will stream video up to 720p and still images up to 1080p, as well as stereo sound. Available now from Amazon and whatnot for $150. PR after the break.

How could we resist a story involving robot-powered babies? The Ithaca College Tots on Bots project aims to mobilize infants with physical disabilities by setting them atop a “mobile robot” equipped with a
Wii Balance Board to let the young operator steer by leaning — which, it turns out, works pretty well. Additionally, the vehicle uses sonar to avoid nasty crashes and a remote control that an adult can use to take control. Further study has to be made before any long term developmental benefits can be ascertained, but in the meantime it does look like a lot of fun. See it in action after the break.
