Android photo backup app reveals burglars’ identities, stupidity

Burglaries are an unfortunately commonplace event in daily urban life, but on some very rare occasions their outcomes give cause for celebration and maybe even a smile. Two young men from the Portland area, keen to get on the smartphone bandwagon without paying, broke in and stole a pair of Motorola Android handsets (along with other electronics) from a nearby household. What they didn’t foresee, however, was that one of the phones would have the free Lookout app, which automatically backs up all photos taken with the handset to a user-accessible server every night. So, in the midst of testing out their ill-gotten loot, the criminals provided the phone’s legitimate owner with enough visual clues for the police to swoop in and apprehend one of them. The search for his partner in crime continues, but the “gadget versus man” fight has already concluded with a clear win for what we presume was a Droid.

[Thanks, John]

Exclusive: first Google Phone / Nexus One photos, Android 2.1 on-board

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Engadget_Exclusive_first_Google_Phone_Nexus_One_photos’; Well here you have it folks, honest-to-goodness pics of the Google Phone… AKA, the Nexus One. As you can see by the photos, the design of the device is largely similar to those we’ve seen, but the graphic on back is slightly different, and that piece of tape is covering a QR code (how very Google of them). Just like we’ve heard before, the updated OS features new 3D elements to the app tray, as well as an extended amount of homescreens, though it looks like the lock screen / mute is the same as in Android 2.0.1. Additionally, there’s now a new grid icon at the bottom of the homescreen, which when pressed brings up a webOS card-style preview of all homescreen pages — which raises some interesting possibilities. Apparently there’s been a new software update for the device pushed tonight, and sure enough the phone is identified as the Nexus One on the system info page. Quite clearly this device is running on T-Mobile, and is also using WiFi, so there’s two other questions you’ve got answers to. The phone also appears to come loaded up with Google Navigation (a bit of a no-brainer) and the brand-spanking-new Google Goggles. Hardware wise, the Nexus does look incredibly thin and sleek, and while there’s not a slew of buttons (those four up front are clearly touch sensitive), there is a dedicated volume rocker along the side. Oh, and note this… no HTC logo anywhere to be found. We’ll update the post as / if we get more info, but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery below!

[Thanks, RD]

Epson unleashes PictureMate Show photo frame that’s also a printer

Epson’s just kicked out another in the PictureMate series, and if you’re into home printing of family memories, you’ll probably want to take heed. The PictureMate Show is a compact printer of super high quality (5,760 x 1,440) 4 x 6-inch photos in about 37 seconds. It also doubles as a photo frame, with the 7-inch, WVGA tilt display on the front of the unit. Anyone who’s spent any considerable time with a printer at home trying to print photos knows that the main concerns are always speed and quality of the final product, so it’s nice to see that Epson’s got its priorities straight here. You can grab up the PictureMate Show now for $299 — and the full press release is after the break.

How-to: get music, videos, and photos off your iPod or iPhone

To think, it’s been over five years since we last tackled how to get music off your iPod, as opposed to the other way around. Back then, the classic model had only recently added the infamous click wheel (while still rocking the monochrome screen, mind you), iPod nano was still called the mini, and viewing photos was a brand new feature worthy of having its own line. It’s time to take another look at how to transfer media of all sorts — audio, video, and pictures — from a variety of iPods and iPhones back to your Windows or Mac OS X machine.

Juicy Couture makes decent looking photo frame, Dean Koontz writes pretty good novel

We have to hand it to Juicy Couture — a company which we would have thought could never, ever crank out anything that made us think, “hey, that’s pretty nice!” Regardless, here it is in the flesh: Juicy Couture’s own take on the digital photo frame, and not a glitter or spangle in sight. In fact, we’re really digging the gaudy, old-timey gold resin frame, which measures 6.5 by 8-inches, and boasts a 2GB SD card (though the hideous logo remains… hideous). It’s up for pre-order for now, and should ship by the end of November — if you don’t mind paying $140 for it.

Parrot’s shiny new wireless photo frame is the first to be powered by Android

We’ve taken a look at Parrot’s Specchio line of pretty Wi-Fi photo frames before, and the company’s new Grande Specchio is bigger, better and — drumroll, please! — runs Android. Android means that you’ll be able to toss some apps on this thing a lot like HP’s Dreamscreen , which will probably take the shape of letting you know about the weather to more advanced things, such as reading RSS feeds. Just like its predecessor, the Grande Specchio has a dedicated email address that you can send photos to and it’ll end up on the frame
