Homemade GPS puzzle box puts a modern spin on treasure hunts
We’ll readily admit that most Arduino mods tend to be exercises in creativity (and eccentricity) with little real world utility, which is why this one piqued our interest. A wedding present conceived of and built by Mikal Hart, the box you see above is set to only open in one particular geographic location, and the puzzle of it is to find out where that might be. You’re allowed 50 attempts at opening the box by hitting the button next to the LCD screen, which in turn gives you a distance from, but not direction to, your destination. What tickles us about this idea, aside from its ingenuity, is the potential to use it without the helpful hints in securing your own valuables. Tetris players found to have greater brain efficiency, thicker cortex and better hair
You just knew all that Tetris playing you did as a kid yesterday was good for you, huh? A new study published by the big thinkers at Mind Research Network has found that “practicing Tetris” can actually improve brain efficiency and lead to a thicker cortex in other areas of the tabula rasa. In short, the study was done in order to show that the brain can change with stimulation, and that “a challenging visuospatial task has an impact on the structure of the cortex.” Of course, this is far from the first published report to use the quarter century-old title as its testing tool, but it’s certainly one of the best for getting your mum and pop to believe gaming really is good for the gord. Rubik’s TouchCube to make debut this weekend… on QVC
It’s not every day that QVC gets first dibs on hot new gadgets (though it’s occurring far more frequently than we’re proud to admit), but we’re hearing that the teleshopping channel will be the place to go if you want to be among the first to own a Rubik’s TouchCube. Believe it or not, the swipe-controlled retro toy will be available to buy for the first time on the Christmas in July segment this weekend. Finger Dance Alarm Clock: it’s like DDR, in an alarm clock
If the world required that you complete an expert DDR jam each morning only moments after you awoke, there’s a solid chance the global death toll would far outpace the birth rate. Thankfully, all that’s typically necessary is that you actually listen to whatever device you’ve got ringing. If you’ve noticed lately that said noises just aren’t cutting it, here’s a little puzzler that’s pretty much guaranteed to either get you up or entangle you in infinite frustration. The £9.99 ($16) Finger Dance Alarm Clock sounds at a user-determined time, and once your weary eyes begin to focus, you then have to use your digits to follow a lighted dance pattern in order to shut the cacophony off. It’s half torture, half genius — precisely the way we like it.
